As a department we are committed to the philosophy that during the four years with us, each pupil should:

  •  Have a positive experience of learning Mathematics.
  •  Show continuous progression and improvement.
  •  Achieve their full potential.

We aim to achieve this by:

Teaching Mathematics as laid down by the National Curriculum 2014, using a variety of methods and stimuli.

Creating a supportive, controlled, learning environment.

Reviewing our own methods and materials.

Ensuring that objective lead lessons, interactive teaching styles and assessment for learning are embedded in our schemes of work and teaching.

In particular, we wish each pupil to develop:

  • A genuine feeling of how numbers fit together; the ability to carry out calculations; understand the significance of results and estimate whether or not an answer is reasonable.

  • The ability to apply mathematics to other subjects, such as Science, Technology and Geography.

  • The ability to solve problems, present solutions clearly, check and interpret results.

The Schemes of Work for Mathematics are based on the National Curriculum 2014. The main published schemes being used are ‘Collins New Primary Maths’ in Key Stage 2 and ‘Maths Frameworking’ in Key Stage 3 but a wide variety of other materials and resources are used. Materials are constantly reviewed, evaluated and updated as new and relevant items become available.

Pupils will revisit concepts across the year to recap, reinforce and then extend their knowledge, skills and understanding. All teaching groups across the year group cover the same topics at a similar time, but at the appropriate level.

All rooms used for the teaching of maths have interactive whiteboards to enable teachers to use the latest up-to-date resources. Other teaching aids are available for teachers to borrow from the large central stock that the department has developed over the years. Classes also have access to two computer suites, a class set of tablets and two class sets of mobile computers. All year groups also have use of the website ‘My Maths’ with pupils having a login and password to access the site. In addition Year 5 and 6 have their own log in to ‘Mathletics’, a web-based learning programme that integrates home and school.

All pupils are taught in ability sets which are reviewed frequently. Work is differentiated within all sets, pace and challenge being extremely important at every level. Most pupils have five hourly lessons each week with Year 6 having six per week. Homework is set in Years 6,7 and 8 and aims to consolidate class work and skills or to increase inquisitiveness.

All staff are committed to raising the standards of numeracy in all pupils, developing their ability to use numeracy skills effectively in all areas of the curriculum and giving them the necessary skills to cope in further education, employment or adult life.
