High quality teaching, differentiated for individual pupils, is the first step in responding to pupils with SEND. Where a period of differentiated curriculum support has not resulted in the child making adequate progress OR where the nature or level of a childâs needs are unlikely to be met by such an approach, provision may need to be made. We will follow the graduated approach and the four-part cycle of: assess, plan, do and review.
We work very closely with lower school colleagues to ensure that all pupils make a happy start to Edward Peake; information is gathered individually about their learning, social and emotional needs prior to entry. In the case of pupils who have been identified as having SEND, additional transition work will take place:
- Parents/carers of prospective pupils with SEND are welcome to visit our school to discuss possible provision for their child with Ms Anderson;
- For pupils with EHCPs, Edward Peake staff will attend Annual Reviews whenever possible
- Pupils identified by lower school colleagues as requiring additional support will follow an individualised programme, such as additional visits, during the summer term prior to entry.
The SEND team will prepare a pupil profile for pupils with additional needs, and this is available electronically to all relevant teaching and support staff, so that they are aware of the pupilâs needs and strategies for working with them.
Edward Peake aims to prepare our pupils as fully as possible for upper school and adult life. Pupils with SEND can benefit from an enhanced transition package and information sharing SENDCo to SENDCo.
At Edward Peake, we aim to make all reasonable adjustments to enable students with SEND to be included and participate in all aspects of school life, including extra-curricular activities. For school trips, reasonable adjustments may include arranging appropriate transport and additional adult support. Parents/carers are involved in planning for such trips, including any individual risk assessments which may be prepared.
Support will be provided to pupils to access clubs during or after school. The âPeakeâ is available at lunchtimes for pupils with SEND.
The Teaching Assistant team is experienced in supporting pupils with emotional difficulties and are knowledgeable about accessing more specialist support, should this be required. The Pastoral team, including the Family Support Worker, provides support through targeted intervention or regular âcheck insâ.
The âPeake âat lunchtime is supported by Teaching Assistants and is open to all pupils with SEND.
The PHSCE curriculum includes the areas of Citizenship, Personal Health and Wellbeing.
Drawing and Talking
Drawing and Talking is a child-centred therapy focusing on prevention, early intervention and recovery of mental health issues. It is aimed at children and young people who have suffered trauma or have underlying emotional difficulties affecting their mental health and well-being. Drawing and Talking therapy also supports those who are not realising their full potential either socially or academically.
Loss and Grief Support
Trained staff can provide Loss and Grief support to pupils as part of a six week programme.
Lego Therapy
LEGO therapy is a social skills programme for children and young people with social communication problems such as autism spectrum disorders. In LEGO therapy pupils work together to build LEGO models and through this have the opportunity to develop social skills such as turn taking, collaboration and social communication.
Life Skills
This programme involves activities such as cooking, gardening, road skills, first aid, a trip to a local cafĂ© and shop and also focuses on personal hygiene and social skills. It is designed to enhance a childâs personal development and increase their confidence and self-esteem which can then be transferred into everyday life.
Precision Teaching
Precision Teaching is a tool to help highly effective teaching and support where a child is finding something difficult or where the skill they need to learn needs to be fluent and automatic. It is one of the most effective teaching strategies for ensuring high levels of fluency and accuracy. Precision Teaching involves short one minute carefully designed tasks to build skills by practising them regularly. Progress is monitored and tracked to ensure the pupil is learning as fast as they can. At Edward Peake we offer Precision Teaching in Maths and English in short daily sessions.
Toe By Toe
Toe By Toe is an intervention aimed at pupils who find it difficult to read fluently and struggle to read unfamiliar words confidently and accurately. This includes weak readers who struggle to decode text, or those with dyslexic difficulties. Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes and the programme can be tailored to suit the individual needs of the pupil.
Dyslexia Gold
This is a fun and interactive online proven to help struggling readers to catch up. The intervention takes place at school but can also be accessed at home.
Edward Peake aims to meet the needs of pupils with a wide range of abilities, including those who may have additional learning needs and/or disabilities. Information on how our school will do this is available in the SEND Information Report and SEND Policy.
